Student Profile: Matthew Wright

Charleston School of Law student Matthew Wright is our latest student profile. Wright, a Georgia native and graduate of Valdosta State University, said once he did his research and looked at law schools that were in the area, Charleston School of Law was “a no brainer.”

Charleston Law: What were your expectations as a 1L?

Wright: My expectations coming into law school was that this was going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done … I knew about law school was that this was going to be a ton of reading, extremely rigorous, and very competitive.  However, once I got into law school, all my professors were very passionate and inspirational towards law.

Charleston Law: What internships or externships have you done?

Wright: I’ve done an externship with the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office at the Berkeley County office. I did that this past summer. It was absolutely amazing … all of them were very passionate about what they did.  So it was a lot of fun.

I’m curious how did that experience prepare you for success in the classroom?

Wright: My experience with the solicitor’s office, the things I learned there, now that I’m taking criminal law and criminal procedure this year, It’s just, it’s such an easy overlap because I’ve already seen it in practice and now I’m just reading the theory on it and being able to apply it.

Charleston School of Law is know for its open door policy. What impact  has that had on you as a student?

Wright: The open door policy and the relationship that I’ve been able to create with my professors was pretty immediate. To see up front their passion for wanting to teach the next generation of attorneys and the passion they have for the legal field … I can say I’ve never had teachers or professors as good as the ones I’ve had here at the Charleston School of Law.
