Maritime Law students tour S. C. State Ports

Charleston School of Law maritime law students recently toured the S. C. Ports Authority. Law School Professor Gordon Schreck organized the event, which included 18 students.

During the tour of the terminal, the students learned how containerized cargo moves daily in and out of the Port of Charleston on modern containerships, each measuring three or more football fields in length and nearly 10 stories above the waterline.

The State Ports Authority President and CEO Micah Mallace addressed the Charleston Law students, followed by a Q&A about the Port’s role as the state’s chief economic engine and career opportunities in the global container transportation industry.

The Ports Authority tour was followed by a tour of the Wando Welch Container Terminal, where students watched two modern containerships load and unload cargo containers.

Professor Schreck noted that students enrolled in the Intermodal Container course at Charleston Law will have talks with the District Director of U.S. Customs for the Port of Charleston and other local leaders in the container shipping industry throughout the fall.
