Law students receive SC Bar Foundation Public Service Fellowship

Charleston School of Law announces the first recipients of the South Carolina Bar Foundation Public Service Fellowship. The Public Service Fellowship is in furtherance of Charleston Law’s dedication to support students with a demonstrated interest in public service careers. The Public Service Fellowship is a grant program made possible by the South Carolina Bar Foundation.

The students selected for the Summer 2026 South Carolina Bar Foundation Public Service Fellowship are Caroline Knudsen (Law Clerk with First Circuit Solicitor’s Office), Victoria VanHout (Law Clerk with Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office – Charleston Office), and Derrick Hinton, II (Law Clerk with Ninth Circuit Public Defender’s Office – Charleston Office).

Fellows were selected based on three criteria:

1. Commitment to public service during and after law school
2. Academic excellence
3. Potential for impact and leadership in the community or public service sector

The Fellowship is a pathway to a career in public service and designed to provide students with legal training and practical experience by working directly with a public service organization.

The SC Bar Foundation Public Service Fellowship’s goal is to promote equity, sustainability, and economic well-being with a focus on South Carolina’s pressing issues while also providing hands-on training through volunteer service in policy development and advocacy in public service.
