Former FMC Commissioner speaks to law students

Charleston School of Law welcomed former US Federal Maritime Commissioner (FMC) Carl Bentzel to speak to law students. The FMC is the government agency that regulates the US international ocean transportation system.

Bentzel described the vital role the ocean shipping industry plays in the US and world economy, noting that the industry grew about 30% during the two-year pandemic and continues to grow due to consumer demand for imported goods.

After completing a four-year term on the Commission (2019-2024), Bentzel became President of the National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE), where he leads initiatives to support and advocate for the US marine terminal operator and stevedore industry.
Prior to his appointment to the FMC, Commissioner Bentzel served on the staff of the late US Senator Fritz Hollings, as Sr. Democratic Counsel to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, working on significant ocean transportation legislation, including the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998.

Charleston School of Law offers one of the few specialized LL.M. programs in Global Trade and Maritime Law in the United States—located in Charleston, South Carolina, home to one of America’s largest and most active container ports.

The program equips foreign-trained and U.S.-educated lawyers with practical expertise in admiralty law, international trade, and maritime commerce through a combination of full-time faculty instruction and mentorship from active industry practitioners.
