Charleston School of Law hosted the 33rd annual Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition.
Charleston Law 2L students Michael Goltra, Addie Lyle, and Haley Yokely won the brief score over Washington University in their semifinal round.
Charleston Law students also won the Law Offices of George W. Nowell Award for Best Respondent’s Brief.
Charleston School of Law also won the Spirit of Judge John R. Brown Award. The committee consisted of Gordon Schreck, our 3L student competition director, Anna Powers, and Professor Jennifer North.
This award is given to the individual, team, or school that shows great commitment to the competition in the tradition of Judge John R. Brown. Anna Powers was also recognized for her phenomenal efforts in coordinating this competition.
Charleston Law adjunct professor Gordon Schreck presented the National Maritime Services Semifinalist Award to the Charleston Law team.
In the final round, Washington University prevailed over Villanova. The finals were held at the J. Waties Waring Judicial Center, U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.
Twenty-nine teams from eighteen law schools participated: Baylor, Charleston School of Law, Chicago-Kent, University of Cincinnati, University of Florida, University of Houston, Louisiana State University, University of Maine, Regent University, Rogers Williams University, University of South Dakota, South Texas College of Law, Southwestern, Suffolk University, University of Texas, Tulane, Villanova, and Washington University (St. Louis).
The awards ceremony was held at the Charleston Museum Auditorium. The award winners were given out by many of the seasoned maritime practitioners who served as judges for our competition, including the current vice president and future president of the Maritime Law Association, Jim Mosely.
The competition is named after Judge John R. Brown, chief judge of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, a prominent admiralty judge and one of the “Fifth Circuit Four.”
