Charleston Law professor rides USCG EAGLE

Gordon Schreck, Charleston School of Law Distinguished Visiting Adjunct Professor of Admiralty and Maritime Law and a retired senior partner at Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP, recently had the unique opportunity to “ride-in” aboard the United States Coast Guard Cutter Barque EAGLE as she arrived in Charleston as part of her 250th Anniversary celebratory tour of selected Gulf and East Coast ports.

The EAGLE is America’s “Tall Ship,” the only active square-rigged sailing ship in United States government service. Built in Germany in 1936, she is now used as a training platform for U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets and officer candidates. Schreck was personally invited to ride in on the EAGLE by Capt. Shawn Lansing, USCG Sector Commander and Captain of the Port for Sector Charleston.

Schreck retired from day-to-day practice in 2018. At Charleston Law, he teaches a course on Intermodal Container Transportation Law and chairs the Law School’s Charleston Maritime Law Institute.

Earlier this year, Schreck was honored by the Maritime Association of South Carolina (MASC) with its first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award for his “Distinguished Service to the Maritime Industry.” He continues to serve as Chair Emeritus of MASC’s board and as an at-large member of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Area Maritime Security Committee, one of the few private-sector members of that committee.
