Spring 2026 Faculty News

• In December, Dean Brown presented to the National Business Institute “MS Word, Excel, AI, and Other Tech Tips and Tricks for Attorneys,” in three parts: 1) Microsoft Word for the Modern Attorney; 2) Best Practices for Microsoft Outlook; and 3) Excel Essentials for Legal Professionals.
• In January, Dean Brown presented on the AALS Panel, “Skills-Based Education in the Age of AI.”  Dean Brown also presented on Generative AI and eDiscovery to the Chicago Bar Association, AI & Legal Practice and Litigation Committee (with Michael Quartararo, president of ACED).  Dean Brown presented to the Institute for Paralegal Education, “ChatGPT for Paralegals.”
• Also in January, Dean Brown and her frequent collaborator Prof. Jessica de Perio Wittman (UConn Law) executed a publication agreement with Carolina Academic Press for Strategic Tech Integration in Legal Academia: Generative AI and ABA Standards, a book on implementing Generative AI in Legal curriculum while adhering to ABA Standards.

Michelle Mensore Condon

Prof. Condon updated the “Open Courts Compendium” for West Virginia for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

Jennifer Lanz

• In December, AALS Section on International Law selected Prof. Lanz’s research paper, “From Drugs to Fish: U.S. Strikes Against Drug Runners in the Caribbean Threaten the Net That Can Be Cast to Combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing,” for presentation on the “New Voices in International Law” panel. 
• In January, the Section also selected Prof. Lanz’s paper to receive its annual Junior Scholar Award. 

Dylan Malagrinò

• In December, Dean Malagrinò presented “LowVelo Community Action Project” at the Lowcountry Diversity Leaders Initiative, The Riley Institute, Furman University, providing strategic planning for MUSC Hollings Cancer Center fundraising.
• In January, Dean Malagrinò presented as a Commentator on a panel at the AALS Section on Property Law.  Dean Malagrinò reviewed, commented, and presented on the paper “Martin Luther King Jr., ‘The Other America Speech,’ Sparking the Law Student’s Moral Imagination” by Prof. Keith Morgan (UDC Law).
• Also in January, Dean Malagrinò presented on a panel at the “Who Says Dirt Law is Boring?” seminar, Real Estate Section Council for the South Carolina Bar, at the 2026 S.C. Bar Association Annual Convention in Savannah, GA.  Dean Malagrinò discussed real estate fundamentals, specifically presenting on the law of easements.

Jessica Moeller

• Dean Moeller accepted an offer for publication in the Idaho Law Review’s 2026 Symposium journal issue and to join Idaho Law as a panelist at its April Symposium, titled “Justice for All: Systemic Transformation of Public Defense.”
• Published in the Idaho Law Review, Dean Moeller’s research paper, “The Geographic Imperative: Ensuring Competent Public Defense for Every Child and Family” proposes to critically analyze the ongoing structural shortcomings in the provision of constitutionally adequate counsel for indigent clients involved in high-stakes juvenile delinquency and civil child protection matters, including Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) proceedings, particularly within rural jurisdictions.  The core argument is that meaningful systemic transformation in public defense must move beyond merely funding attorneys to mandating and sustaining specialized competence in litigation areas that demand distinct knowledge, skills, and resources.  Absent this shift, states transitioning to centralized defense models risk creating a two-tiered justice system in which the quality of constitutional representation is dictated by a client’s proximity to an urban center.

Melanie Regis

• Professor Regis’s new paper, tentatively titled “Teaching Voir Dire,” will be forthcoming later this year in Volume 1 of The Journal of Advocacy and Litigation.  The Journal of Advocacy and Litigation is a new online publication and a joint partnership between the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, Syracuse University College of Law, Texas Southern University, the University of Illinois College of Law, and the University of San Francisco School of Law.  The Journal is peer-reviewed and highlights scholarship on pedagogical approaches related to advocacy instruction, the advancement and refinement of effective real-world advocacy, and the intersection of legal doctrine, advocacy, and litigation. “Teaching Voir Dire,” will focus on ways in which Prof. Regis has introduced voir dire, an undertaught advocacy skill, into both doctrinal and elective courses, including attorney-conducted voir dire as a standalone summer elective.
• A symposium, hosted by the Kimball R. and Karen Gatsis Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism, will also be held on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago in May in conjunction with the inaugural issue.

Gordon Schreck

On January 21, 2026, Professor Gordon Schreck attended a dinner sponsored by the Charleston chapter of the Propeller Club of the U.S., of which he has been a long-time member and former president, to hear a talk by the Honorable Carl W. Bentzel, former Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission.  Prof. Schreck Carl secured Mr. Bentzel, currently serving as President of the National Association of Waterfront Employers, to provide a guest lecture to Prof. Schreck’s students in Fall 2026.

Allyson Haynes Stuart

In January, Professor Stuart accepted an invitation to publish in the University of Illinois Law Review and to participate in the “Future of Consent in Privacy Symposium” at the University of Illinois College of Law.
