Charleston School of Law offers an advanced degree program in Admiralty and Maritime Law. The program brings students together with the most experienced practitioners, judges, and professors across a broad range of admiralty law specialties, as well as with non-lawyer maritime professionals who make our port such a success.
Charleston Law adjunct professor Gordon Schreck represented the school at last week’s event co-hosted by the Maritime Association of South Carolina and the Propeller Club of the U.S., Port of Charleston.
The Propeller Club of the Port of Charleston is the largest membership organization on the Charleston waterfront, representing all of the State’s maritime shipping interests while networking with those who wish to engage and succeed in transportation and related service industries.
Honorable Carl W. Bentzel, former Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission (2019-’24), served as the keynote speaker at the event.
Bentzel spoke on the dangers of the rising level of dependence by U.S. shippers on container transportation services and equipment provided by entities of the People’s Republic of China, including 75% of the world’s merchant container fleet, 98% of ocean containers used in global trade, and most of the world’s ship-to-shore container cranes.
Bentzel currently serves as the President of the National Association of Waterfront Employers and Executive Director of the National Maritime Safety Association in D.C.
According to Professor Schreck, Bentzel has agreed to reprise his talk at an upcoming Zoom conference with Schreck’s class on Intermodal Container Transportation Law.

Carl W. Bentzel (former Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission, 2019-24) and Charleston Law adjunct professor Gordon Schreck attended last week’s dinner meeting of the Propeller Club of the U.S., Port of Charleston.
Charleston School of Law alumnus Tony Romeo ('17) will kick off the Spring '26 Professionalism Series.
Charleston School of Law will be on the road again this Spring. Our next stop will be at the University of Alabama Law School Fair on Thursday, January 29, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (CST).
