With Election Day less than two weeks away, political debate has reached a fever pitch.
According to a recent survey conducted by Charleston School of Law wellness partner TimelyCare, “65% of college students are stressed and/or anxious about the upcoming U.S. presidential election.”
According to TimelyCare, students struggle with “fear about the future in today’s politically charged climate … and feel the urge to act immediately on issues they’re passionate about but are simultaneously anxious about the unknown and potential challenges that lie ahead.”
Still, in this season of uncertainty, mental health professionals encourage law students to find connection in the student community to share your feelings and civic engagement. TimelyCare added, “while it can be easy to isolate and retreat, staying engaged can offer a support system. At the same time, she said it is important to know when to protect your personal space and set boundaries for engaging with others.”
Charleston School of Law encourages law students, especially those heavily engaged in the political process, to find a community, be aware of the emotional temperature when discussing the election, remain respectful of others’ opinions, and recognize if/when it’s time to seek help. Charleston Law and TimelyCare offer FREE mental health resources to help students manage stress during election season.
