Professor Finkel was the founding member and a managing attorney for the Finkel Law Firm, LLC from 1970 until 2007. In 2006 he joined the Charleston School of Law as a Distinguished Visiting Professor. In 2007 he went of counsel to the Finkel Law Firm, LLC and joined the law school faculty full time as a Professor of Law where he taught Torts, Insurance Law, Trial Advocacy, Evidence, Criminal Procedure and Principals of the Law of Policing. In 2016 the Charleston School of Law granted Mr. Finkel Emeritus status.
From 1981 until 2006, he taught Trial Advocacy and Insurance Law at the University of South Carolina School of Law as an Adjunct Professor. He is a past President of the South Carolina Association for Justice; has served as Chairman of the Insurance, Negligence and Workers Compensation Section of the South Carolina Bar; Chairman of the South Carolina Bar Referral Service and as a member of the Bar’s Board of Governors and the House of Delegates. He has served as a Special Judge for the Richland County Family Court and the Court of General Sessions for the Fifth Judicial Circuit. Mr. Finkel is a certified Circuit Court Arbitrator, a member of the Ninth Circuit Fee Disputes Panel and as a Hearing Officer for the South Carolina Department of Insurance. In 1981, he served on the Governor’s Sentencing Guidelines Commission and the South Carolina Appellate Defense Commission.
He is a Sustaining Life Member of the American Law Institute, a Senior Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Finkel is admitted to the South Carolina Bar and the District of Columbia Bar.
