The Charleston School of Law welcomes the South Carolina Supreme Court to Charleston on September 10-11. The two-day term of court will be held in the Capers Hall Auditorium on the campus of The Citadel and is open to the public.
“The primary reason we travel all over our great state is to give students and members of the public a real civics lesson on the Judicial Branch of government,” said Supreme Court of Carolina Chief Justice John Kittredge. “The Court has scheduled a mix of cases, civil and criminal designed to stimulate critical thought and the give the audience a front-row perspective of the law in action.”
Arguments will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10 and at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11. The Court will entertain questions from the audience following each argument.
In addition, to serve the greater good, Charleston Law has partnered with the Joseph F. Rice School of Law at the University of South Carolina, Charleston Pro Bono Legal Services, the Center for Heirs Property Preservation, the Charleston County Probate Court, the SC Bar, and South Carolina Legal Services to provide free legal services for members of the public.
“The Supreme Court cares deeply about our state and its citizens,” said Justice Kittredge. “Our legal system is founded on the bedrock principle of fair, accessible, and equal justice for all. We do our best to make those goals real and tangible, not merely aspirational.”
Attorneys will be available at the Citadel Alumni Center from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10, for those who need assistance with wills, powers of attorney, landlord-tenant issues, and other related legal matters.
