Charleston Maritime Law Institute’s Maritime Journal (MALABU)

MALABU

MALABU is Charleston School of Law’s Maritime Law Bulletin. With the historic port city of Charleston as a backdrop, MALABU brings timely and useful maritime-focused articles to practicing attorneys, law professors, students, and those in the maritime field. MALABU is run by a board of law students, and faculty advisors with special interests in admiralty, with generous support from the Charleston Maritime Association.

Submissions: MALABU publishes with two selection cycles twice a year, and is now accepting submissions of Articles, Essays, Book Reviews, and Forum pieces for publication. To submit a piece, please email us at malabu@charlestonlaw.edu.

About Us

  • Mission: The Charleston Maritime Law Institute’s Maritime Journal (MALABU) is a scholarly journal that fosters the expansion of the knowledge of students, practitioners, scholars, and the judiciary, in the field of maritime law, transportation law, international law, and logistics.
  • Composition and Admission:
    • MALABU is led by twelve editors who sit on the Executive Board and is guided by a Board of Directors composed of alumni, faculty, and representatives.
    • The Journal selects editors after the spring of their first year at Charleston School of Law. The admissions process includes participating in a write-on competition, assessing drafting and citation skills, as well as an analysis of legal scholarship. Application materials are anonymized throughout our admissions process. 
    • For transfer students, MALABU provides a parallel admissions process.
    • Students may also be offered admission if they write a Note that is accepted for publication in the Journal
    • If you have any questions about our admissions processes, please contact our Managing Editor.
  • Editing Process:
    • MALABU’s editing process is extremely extensive. Our editor’s recommend changes to the piece’s structure and substance, line-edit the piece to ensure that every claim is completely and accurately supported and conduct a thorough proofread.
