Students get practical view of container shipping industry

OCT. 17, 2018 – It was not a typical class day for a dozen second and third-year students from the Charleston School of Law who learned about the container shipping industry during an on-site tour of the Wando Welch Container Terminal last Friday.

Adjunct Visiting Professor Gordon Schreck arranged the tour as part of his Intermodal Container Transportation Law class. Jim Newsome, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority, personally conducted the tour. Students at a tour of the Wando Welch Terminal

Students began the day learning about how the SPA functions as a quasi-governmental ocean terminal operator and South Carolina’s primary economic development engine. Following the presentation, Newsome took the students on a tour of the Wando Welch Terminal, the port’s largest ocean container facility. During the tour, students observed cargo loading and discharging operations underway on a modern, post-Panamax containership.

“This experience introduced and exposed the students not only to the law relating to the transport of intermodal containerized cargo, but also to the law related to the container shipping industry,” Professor Schreck explained.
