Lawton named school's new associate dean

CHARLESTON, S.C., Aug. 4, 2008 - - Associate Professor Margaret Lawton has been named associate dean for academic affairs at the Charleston School of Law, Dean Andy Abrams announced today.

Lawton

"Professor Lawton's demonstrated administrative acumen while chairing and participating on key faculty committees and her strong interpersonal skills both in and out of the classroom makes her a logical choice for this critically important post," Abrams said. "She is highly respected by students, faculty and staff, and, in her new capacity as associate academic dean, she will be a tremendous asset to our administrative team."

Associate Professor Nancy Zisk, who has served as the school's first associate dean for academic affairs from July 2006, returns to full-time teaching duties.

"Professor Zisk, who our students named 'Professor of the Year' in 2006, has done an outstanding job as associate dean," Abrams said. "Professor Lawton is an ideal person to step into the breach to replace her as she resumes academic pursuits here."

About Margaret Lawton

Lawton, a native of Allendale, S.C., joined the Charleston School of Law in 2005 to teach substantive criminal law, constitutional criminal procedure and trial advocacy. Prior to coming to Charleston, she served on the faculty at the Appalachian School of Law where she was named outstanding teacher for the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 academic years.

Lawton has extensive trial and appellate criminal practice experience. Following a clerkship with the Hon. Thomas A. Flannery of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, she prosecuted criminal cases as an assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C.

Lawton has a bachelor's degree from Duke University (cum laude) and a law degree (magna cum laude) from Georgetown University Law Center. At Georgetown, she was a Public Interest Law Scholar and a member of the Order of the Coif, served as an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal, and served as a research assistant to Father Robert Drinan, a noted scholar of international human rights and legal ethics.
