Family law practitioner’s not only advise clients on their legal rights, but also help them through some of the most stressful experiences in life.
This May, the Honorable Brian M. Gibbons taught a one-hour S.C. Family Law Boot Camp. During the course, students learned how to navigate the basics of Family Law issues for prospective clients by exploring the major points of what it takes to be a successful lawyer. Guest lecturers, class discussions and case studies encompassed the legal issues discussed, including divorce, child custody and visitation, adoption and more.
“After taking Judge Gibbons’ Family Law Boot Camp, I can say that Family Law is now one of my top three areas of interest,” said Jennifer Ryan, a third-year student. “Judge Gibbons captivates students with his thorough applications of law and the diplomatic reasoning behind his conclusions.”
In class, students were given a practical application of legal concepts as they focused on real cases litigated and tried before Judge Gibbons while he was on the Family Court Bench. “The practical focus on litigation tactics combined with the concise elements of law make Judge Gibbons’ Family Law Boot Camp a ‘must have’ for all law students planning to take the South Carolina Bar Exam,” said Ryan.
“I enjoy sharing my wealth of experience with law students as they consider what type of practice they wish to be involved in; it’s a way to give back to the profession,” said Judge Gibbons.
Judge Gibbons is a 1985 graduate of Wade Hampton Academy (Orangeburg Prep) and received his B.S. degree in biology, cum laude from The Citadel in 1989. Judge Gibbons practiced law with Hamilton, Delleney and Gibbons until May of 2005 when he was elected to the Family Court bench. His practice consisted of a general practice with an emphasis on family law, criminal defense and personal injury. He was elected to the Circuit Court bench in May of 2013.
